Bead-it Bags

Making small items seems endlessly popular, so it's not surprising that there would be renewed curiosity about knit beaded bags.

Theresa Williams, The BagLady, has published three booklets on beaded bags. They were written to create interest in an age-old craft and to merge several artforms (bead knitting, beadwork, embroidery, and ribbon work)in new, exciting ways.

Each booklet carefully spells out the steps to make a beaded bag, beginning with the necessary skills and ending with assembly and finishing. In each, Theresa gives us a clever poem with lines such as: "Work a little, play a lot, bead up a storm; Work a little, play a lot, knit from dusk til morn." She also includes an appendix with definitions, sources, reference books and care guidelines. It's obvious that she's done her homework and has thought a lot about her approach.

Best of all, these are not projects that will take a lifetime to make. The small pendant bags can be made in a few hours. The suggested retail prices are $10.95 for the Pendant Bag Booklet and $11.95 for the Knitted Handbags 1 and 2.

In this series of three booklets, Williams provides step-by-step instructions for knitting her beaded bag designs, as well as instructions for finishing and diagrams to guide in embellishing the bags with silk ribbon embroidery. Bead Knitted Handbags 1 features three delicately shaded handbags, while Bead Knitted Handbags 2 has handbags in bolder reds, blues, and greys. Taking inspiration from Victorian finger purses, Bead Knitted Pendant Bags features two patterns for tiny purses to be hung as pendants from matching necklaces. All of the projects require only basic knitting skills, and Williams illustrates a technique to string the beads easily onto the knitting thread. Explore the creative possibilities of combining needlework techniques with these booklets as your guide, and allow these projects to bring a bit of Victoriana to your accessory collection.
